T​‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌​his assessment addresses all 5 of the unit learning outcomes: 1. Identify and contextualise the natural and anthropogenic factors that influence population, community and habitat characteristics, persistence and stability.

2. Develop a critical understanding of the value of local, regional and global biodiversity, the aims of conservation in maintaining biodiversity and the management approaches and techniques used to fulfil those aims 3. Make evidenced arguments for optimal strategies for biodiversity conservation in the context of the need for sustainable economic development.

4. Appraise major current issues in biodiversity conservation management. 5. Formulate and evaluate a conservation strategy for a given situation. Brief description: Your task is to produce an illustrated report in which you formulate and evaluate a conservation strategy for a site selected from a list of candidates.

Your report should be based on appropriate research and analysis, and should present a synthesis of the practice of site selection and current understanding of habitat management. It is important that you adopt a staged approach to this assessment by preparing sections of your report concurrently with relevant taught sessions of the unit.

Details The basis of your task is to review information you are given about 10 candidate sites and then ? compare them in terms of their value for nature conservation ? devise a method for ranking the sites then, using the data provided via the unit Moodle site together with additional information on the habitats and species present at the sites that you are able to discover through research ? use your devised method to place the sites in order of importance from a conservation perspective Having ranked the sites you must thoroughly describe and then make management recommendations for your top-ranked site.

Your report should comprise four sections: 1. Introducti​‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌​on [5% of assessment marks]. In this first section, with reference to appropriate literature, you must concisely outline the background, purpose and structure of the report 2.

Rankings – method and justification [25% of assessment marks]. In this second section, with reference to appropriate literature, you must a. briefly describe and justify the ranking method you have devised/chosen, b. rank your sites and succinctly justify your final rankings with reference to the sites’ characteristics, and relevant conservation legislation, regulations and agreements.

Then, for your top-ranked site: 3. Site description [20% of assessment marks]. Here you should present a thorough description of the key features (i.e. site location; description of habitats and species; threats to the site; conservation designations) of your chosen site. . 4. Recommendations for habitat and species management and conclusion [30% of assessment marks] In this final section, you should make recommendations for habitat and species management with explanations and justifications supported by appropriate literature.

Additional marks will be allocated for ? Referencing [10% of assessment marks]. Your report must include a minimum of 15 key references, cited and listed in the Harvard style. ? Presentation [10% of assessment marks] Your report should be easy to navigate, have a clear layout, be clearly written and make good use of maps, figures and other illustrations as appropriate.
