A‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌ssignment 2 – Case Study/Essay Description of Essay / Case study assessment This assessment is oriented in providing an understanding of planning and control tools within the realm of the triple constraint of project management (i.

e. scope, time and cost). You will be working on a project of your choice. The project can be any kind of project that you either locate through literature or from your experience/ work environment. Your aim is to pick a tool to plan one area of your project and show: a) a good understanding of the benefits of using the tool as described in the literature and b) ability to actually use the tool for planning purposes.

The tools that you can pick from are: – Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) – Gantt chart – Critical Path Method – Time-phased budget of the project You should only pick one tool and address one knowledge area (scope, time or cost). Any rational hypotheses for the details of the case (e.

g. duration of activities, cost, etc.) are permitted. The exact contents of the report that you will provide, as well as some tips on what should they include are given below (see format and style). Note: in case you pick a tool that entails calculations, you should not use any software for doing the calculations.

However, you may use software for designing graphs etc. if you want to. Format and style Your overall report should maintain the following structure: i Cover page (of your choice: make sure that your name appears here) ii Table of Contents 1. Brief project description (in this section you need to give a quick overview of the project for a “non-informed audience” – i.

e. someone who is not specialised in the relevant Industry). 2. Importance of the “selected tool” for ma‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌naging a project (in this section you should discuss the importance of the tool in general as can be deduced from literature and then specifically argue about the importance of the tool for the project that you selected).

3. Application of the tool – illustrative example (this is the technical part of your case study where you should apply the actual tool for planning your project). List of references Requirements – You should submit only one file (.pdf or .doc). – Your overall report should be approximately 500 to 800 words in length (assuming that the rest 500 to 700 words is equivalent to the effort for creating the relevant graphs and do any calculations) – Print the word count at the end of your report – This is an individual assessment (no provision for teamwork).

– The assignment must be submitted through Gradebook. – The Harvard (UniSA) referencing system must be used consistently throughout this assignment, where appropriate. – Feedback on this assignment will be provided electronically, within two to three weeks of submission. – Criteria for marking are included in the indicative feedback form provided in Learnonline.

Course Objectives While working on the assignment, students should recall that this exercise contributes to the achievement of course objectives (CO) 2, 3 and 4. Thus the following may be used as tips: In relation to CO2 – focus on demonstrating critical thinking in analysing your project. In relation to CO3 – focus on effectively communicating your work and ideas.

In relation to CO4 – focus on providing interesting insights upon reflection that can be useful to other potential project team members.
